As a designer and educator, I have been thinking about how design could take a larger role in supporting social justice. Visual Communication design is not just a form of aesthetic power, but also a form of cultural power.

Most of my students are freshmen and they are quite new in the digital design world. We ask the question: With today’s technology, how can we create an effective design in a more digital space? I designed this project for my students to creatively use typographic poster design and animation to speak out for what they believe.

Emoticon Love Theory

The Emoticon Love Theory series is a project combining performance, digital photography and graphic design. Emoticons are typographic symbols that have been used in text-based communications since the early 1980s. As an emerging digital language, their widespread use and ability to convey complex messages evoke questions about digital communication’s fraught ties to identity and inclusion.
